Fabian Bachrach Receives the Spirt of Beit Ruth Award at Annual Gala

On Tuesday, May 7, 2024, nearly 300 guests gathered to applaud the extraordinary work of Beit Ruth, honor Fabian Bachrach with the Spirit of Beit Ruth Award, and continue to inspire one another with hope for a brighter future at   Guastavino’s in New York City.

Beit Ruth Executive Director Danielle Burenstein welcomed guests and shared, “Violence against girls and young women transcends cultures, religion, and borders — keeping them from pursuing and realizing their full potential, keeping them from becoming part of the change we all want to see in the world . . . That is why we are all here: To be glimmers of hope that shine a light on the work that still needs to be done — to create a better tomorrow for Israel’s at-risk girls — to be the philanthropic engine that fuels change, action, and impact. Now, more than ever.”

Tufts University Provost and Senior Vice President Dr. Caroline Genco paid tribute to Fabian Bachrach, the recipient of the Spirit of Beit Ruth Award. “The Beit Ruth-Tufts University International Fellowship Program was developed after Fabian visited Beit Ruth in 2018 and was inspired to create an experience for Tufts University students that would also benefit the mission of Beit Ruth,” said Dr. Genco. “Fabian, thank you for your vision, your leadership, and your passion. I can think of no one who is more deserving of this award. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor.”

During his acceptance remarks, Fabian shared the story about his first trip to the Village. “The minute I walked into the Village, I knew I was in an important place,” said Fabian. “Meeting with the girls, hearing from the staff about unimaginable childhood trauma — and having two daughters of my own — I knew I wanted to be part of this place that was changing the lives of so many girls and young women, helping them to fulfill their potential and live a life of purpose and dignity.

“I know so many of you have done so much, which brings me to a question that I’ve asked myself: Have I done all that I can for Beit Ruth’s girls — especially now — to make sure they, too, become part of Israel’s fabric and strength? Not yet. We can continue to be proud of what we achieved together as part of this incredible Beit Ruth family — and also know, our work is not done — yet.”

Seven months after October 7, with an ongoing war and missile attacks, Beit Ruth Israel Managing Director Inbal Yochanan described the current situation in the Village. “The war has affected all of us regardless of where we are in the world. Among the many needs we are dealing with in the Village is our girls experiencing retriggered trauma, like many victims of sexual violence and abuse. This last year, however, also brought incredible accomplishments. Opening two new residential houses has allowed us to provide care to even more girls. We created new life and job skill programs to better empower our girls to become part of a strong Israel, because Israel will remain strong. We’ve reached out to different communities post-October 7 to see how we can lend our expertise about trauma care. We’re teaching our girls the value of giving back through our Tikkun HaLev — Repair the Heart program. And, of course, watching our girls and 400+ alumnae thrive, because of the care that you help provide. This is the heart and soul of Beit Ruth.”

Susan Ashner, Beit Ruth Founder and Board Co-Chair, impressed guests with the history of Beit Ruth and its current extraordinary accomplishments. “When I watch that beautiful video, I can’t help but think back to where we started,” Susan shared. “Knowing there was a critical need for at-risk girls in Israel, my husband Michael and I started a pilot program in Israel with 12 girls. As more and more girls came to us, we started to build the Beit Ruth Village. Today, we have five Residential Houses and we’re at capacity, caring for 60 girls at a time – about 75 each year. We built an onsite school where our girls are consistently scoring higher than the national average on Israel’s difficult matriculation exams.

“Our Center of Knowledge is an onsite hub that trains professionals throughout Israel about the needs of at-risk girls so, when they meet them on the streets, in a classroom, hospital, or courtroom, they understand that these girls are the victims — and need our compassion and our care. Our Alumnae Program — now 400+ Beit Ruth Alumnae from throughout Israel — provides mentorship, financial support, continuing therapy, and many other needed resources — because like any young person, they need it. And like any family, we need to be there for them.

“Our alumnae serve in the IDF or National Service, work as nurses, teachers, counselors, graphic designers — and two have returned to Beit Ruth to work, wanting to give back to others what was given to them. A chance. When I hear Beit Ruth alumnae who have become mothers say, ‘I’m proud to be the kind of mother I wish I had.’ It means everything. The cycle of violence has been broken.”

Guests were delighted by performances from Ramaz High School Choir and hearing from Israeli street artists, Dede Bandaid and Nitzan Mintz, who designed the iconic KIDNAPPED posters. “Dede and I have been to the Village — we saw the art studio and heard the girls singing in the music room,” said Nitzan. “It was so emotional. Dede and I have survived our own trauma. It’s only because of art that we’re able to tell our stories.” Dede added, “Seeing the different artistic expressions that the girls created and hearing the stories behind them was incredibly powerful.”

Iris Zurkel, Beit Ruth art teacher, introduced the dramatic and inspiring art projects created by girls in the Beit Ruth Village that were exhibited at the event. From the bold Wedding Dress that demonstrated the need to be “heard and seen like a drama queen” to the Jeans Project that reimagined how we see and say something. Guests were mesmerized by the art, including a pair of jeans created by a 16-year-old girl who had been gang raped but is now healing at Beit Ruth. Through art — painting, drawing, working with clay, etc. — the girls express what they can’t with words — both pain and hope.

Another highlight of the evening was hearing from alumnae who shared their stories — how Beit Ruth saved them from abuse and from the streets, and how their lives were transformed, having space and tools to heal, closing educational gaps, developing life and job skills, and learning to trust themselves and others.

Thank you to our Gala Chairs, Host Committee, and entire team for making our Annual Gala a resounding success. On behalf of the Board, our staff, our girls, and our alumnae, we are so grateful to all of you for being part of the Beit Ruth family. Check out our 2024 gala photos.

Ronit Lev-Ari, Beit Ruth’s Director of the Center of Knowledge, Emeritus, was honored by the Michal Sela Forum

February 2024

Ronit Lev-Ari, Beit Ruth’s Director of the Center of Knowledge, Emeritus, was honored by the Michal Sela Forum that is “dedicated to saving lives and combating domestic violence through innovation and technological solutions.” The Forum was founded by Lily Ben-Ami following the murder of her sister, Michal.

During the event, Ben-Ami noted Ronit’s deep expertise in the field of violence against women and the contributions she has made to the field, including at Beit Ruth, as the head of the Authority for the Status of Women, and creating the first domestic violence shelter in Israel. With Ronit’s guidance,  the Michal Sela Forum created a set of five tool boxes that provide warning signs in a relationship – a project that Ben-Ami said has saved the most lives from the Michal Sela Forum.

“Ronit, behind you, there are thousands of women whose lives you’ve saved,” Ben-Ami said. “For me and for us, it is a privilege to work with you, at your side, to learn from you. I am very proud to be here, to give you this award, and in some way to say thank you.” Click Here to watch.

Beit Ruth Joins Protest Against UN’s Silence of Sexual Violence on October 7

December 2023

As part of the 16 Days of Activism that began on International Day for the Elimination of Violence (November 25), Beit Ruth’s founder, Susan Ashner and the Beit Ruth U.S. team helped bring to light the United Nations’ refusal to condemn the sexual violence perpetrated against Israeli women on October 7. Along with hundreds of protesters outside the UN, Beit Ruth’s purpose was to continue to give voice to women who can no longer speak for themselves; condemn the deafening silence of international communities, and to shed a sliver of light on the darkness as Chanukah approached.

An estimated 300 women and men chanted ‘rape is rape,’ ‘me too UNless you are a Jew,’ ‘rape is not resistance,’ and ‘busha – ‘shame’ in Hebrew, in response to presenters describing the betrayal they felt – we all felt – at the lack of response by feminist organizations who Jewish women have fought alongside with for abortion rights, equal pay, to bring back girls kidnapped by Boko Haram, and many other shared issues.

Speakers included Dr. Cochav Elkayam-Levy, Chair of the Israel’s Civil Commission on October 7 Crimes by Hamas Against Women and Children that is working to gather testimony and document evidence of the events of October 7 and to develop a comprehensive accounting of gender-based violence committed by Hamas; Sheila Katz, President of the National Council of Jewish Women; former Congresswoman and current President of the New York Chapter of NOW (National Organization of Women), Carolyn Maloney; and Tal Hochman, Director of Government Relations at the Women's Lobby in Israel, who said, “Rape is rape. There is no but and no if. You cannot call yourself a feminist organization if you say resistance by all means necessary.”

While Beit Ruth raised our voices outside, inside the UN, painstaking testimonies were shared during Hear Our Voices: Special Session at the United Nations on Sexual-Based Violence War Crimes that Occurred on October 7 by Hamas in Israel.” Among the featured speakers were Sheryl Sandberg, former Meta COO, and Gilad Erdan, Israel’s Ambassador to the UN.

“On Oct. 7, Hamas brutally murdered 1,200 souls and in some cases, they first raped their victims,” Sandberg said. “We know this from eyewitnesses, we know this from combat paramedics, we would know this from some victims if more had been allowed to live.”

Columbia University Joins Tufts as Newest Beit Ruth Fellowship Program

July 2023

As an incubator of ideas and a learning lab for professionals, Beit Ruth is proud to welcome Natalie Katalan as Beit Ruth’s first Columbia University-List College Fellow in Jewish Social Entrepreneurship. The Fellowship is for students who wish to enhance their skills as Jewish Social Entrepreneurs and become equipped with skills to help them tackle major social issues.

Natalie is a dual major in Psychology and Jewish History with a history of campus involvement in leadership activities, advocacy, engagement, and academic support. During the 2023-2024 academic year, she will be working on a variety of projects, including with our Center of Knowledge, Beit Ruth's 2024 Gala, and supporting our overall development work.

Natalie joins Melissa Lovitz, the most recent Beit Ruth-Tufts International Fellow, a program that began in 2019 in partnership with the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life with 2 Summer Fellows, and continued during the pandemic with "Cultivating Confidence and Conversational English Skills," a specially designed virtual program to build the capacity of Beit Ruth's staff to improve their conversational English skills using a social-emotional framework that allowed them to learn the lessons through the lens of their work.

In 2022, Beit Ruth began working on a research project with the Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study & Human Development at Tufts. Melissa worked closely with Beit Ruth's US and Israel teams , and visited the Village in December 2022 to gather data. She recently completed the project documenting Beit Ruth's Theory of Change and validating our methodology and the features that make our work unique. Stay tuned for more!

Beit Ruth Convenes Global Experts, Explores Solutions to End Gender-Based Violence

February 2023

Beit Ruth convened an international panel of experts to explore solutions to ending gender-based violence during “This Doesn’t Happen in My Community: Understanding Violence Against Girls & Young Women Locally & Globally.”

“We know that it’s a natural human response to deny problems in our own communities and to think about issues as happening ‘out there’ or ‘over there’ or to ‘those people,’ “but not here, not to us,” said Beit Ruth’s Executive Director, Danielle Burenstein, who moderated the webinar. “Our vision is to confront the challenge of gender-based violence – what the United Nations calls a human rights violation with ‘immediate and long-term physical, sexual, and mental consequences for women and girls that can be devastating.’  We can do this by looking into all of our communities, and to realize that violence afflicts everyone regardless of background, education, religion, or wealth.”

The event was developed in partnership with the Jewish Council of North Central Florida, and leadership from the Golda Meir MASHAV Carmel International Training Center, an arm of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Following a special welcome by Ambassador Irit Savion, Director of the MASHAV Training and Capacity-Building Department, the event featured experts in the field of domestic violence and trauma treatment, including therapist and keynote speaker Randee Kogan. Kogan was featured in “Ghislaine Maxwell: Filthy Rich,” the Netflix documentary about Ms. Maxwell, the partner of Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender who was found dead in prison while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, treated some of Epstein’s teenage victims, helping them work through the trauma.

Through case studies, Kogan defined critical issues, including coercive control and sexual exploitation, and shared the stages, signs, and long-term effects of grooming, as well as trauma reactions.

“Ninety percent of child victims know their abuser – we are no longer speaking about stranger danger,” Kogan explained, adding, “These are individuals that are in our children’s trust circle, our trust circle.” This includes babysitters, youth group leaders, and people in the helping professionals who are harming our children.

Protecting children from grooming includes teaching children proper names of body parts, allowing children to say “no” to being hugged, and talking to children about the importance of not keeping secrets.

Cognitive, physical, and emotional trauma reactions can begin immediately or until later in life. Because the pain is suppressed, symptoms or emotions may appear that they’re not ready to deal with. In response to their trauma, victims may become aggressive, confused, distrust people, overeat, feel dirty, depressed, afraid, have poor impulse control, and other reactions.

Mor Ben Simchon Lipin, a Social Worker and expert in treating complex post-trauma, presented Beit Ruth’s pioneering methodology and treatment of teenage girls who are provided protection and care, as well as an education, therapy, and programs and services that change the course of their lives.

Speaking about the lack of attention abused and neglected girls receive, Lipin explained that girls become desperate to escape abuse – they may begin to live on the streets, engage in unsafe sexual behavior, attempt suicide, and abuse drugs and alcohol.

“These behaviors,” she said, “produce deeper and deeper trauma, and this is key – a person who doesn’t understand that these behaviors are responses to abuse and are cries for help – blame and accuse girls of acting out in inappropriate ways.”

Dr. Shachar Re’em, Director of Golda Meir MASHAV Carmel International Training Center, shared the Center’s prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation content and methodology for combating gender-based violence, domestic violence, and human trafficking. MASHAV has provided training to more than 600 government officials, NGOs, psychologists, psychotherapists, lawyers, judges, police officers, activities, social workers, health care professionals, and activists from 147 countries.

Also joining the panel was Rabbi Menachem Creditor, the Pearl & Ira Meyer Scholar in Residence with UJA-Federation New York. While acknowledging that as a man he cannot truly understand what girls and women experience solely on the basis of their gender, Creditor stressed the imperative for a communal response within and outside of the Jewish community, and that men have an essential responsibility to be allies in the fight against gender-based violence.

“Judaism demands the absolute rejection of all forms of abuse and demands that we do everything in our power to protect our children from abuse,” Creditor said. “Abuse does happen in Jewish families – physical and verbal and emotional abuse happens in Jewish families and way too often, the Jewish community colludes to continue the abuse.”

The Jewish community’s responsibility to end gender-based violence, he noted, includes believing women and children; place information about safety resources in safe spaces and public view; and to fund and make mandatory, training about abuse to Jewish communal professionals.

“Wherever we are in the world,” Burenstein added, “we can all be part of the fight and the solution to end violence against girls and young women.”

Beit Ruth Inaugural Young Leadership Council Sells Out!

September 2022

On September 7, 2022, Beit Ruth celebrated the launch of its Young Leadership Council with a Cocktail Party at 7 World Trade Center!

Our Young Leadership Council seeks to engage young professionals, emerging leaders, and budding philanthropists, ages 25-40, in our mission to help break the cycle of generational violence. By providing long-term and meaningful experiences, we hope to guide young leaders on a lifelong path of supporting Israel and the Jewish world through action, leadership, and philanthropy, in support of young women and girls at-risk.

Live music from with DJ ProgByZig filled the room of this sold-out event as more than 150 young leaders danced, enjoyed a light dinner, and toasted to the event's success throughout the evening. They also networked and learned about Beit Ruth's mission to end generational violence. And to bring a glimpse of Beit Ruth to NYC, Beit Ruth Alumna, Hodaya, joined us from Israel to share her story of transformation, thanks to Beit Ruth.

Reflecting on a visit to the Village with her husband, David, YLC Executive Committee Member, Alex Damaghi Dweck, shared: "We truly believe that this organization nurtures at-risk girls into the future leaders, caring mothers, and engaged citizens of Israel, which is vital to the future of our homeland. Girls felt powerless and alone when they first arrived at Beit Ruth, but we saw the uplifting power of the Village. So, we wanted you to come tonight and have a great time, but we also wanted you to know about Beit Ruth."

Beit Ruth is grateful to the entire YLC Executive Committee: Zack Drobner, Alexandra Damaghi Dweck, David Dweck, Rachel Drobner Goldberg, Michael Goldberg, Stephanie Wilf Kahn, and Adam Kahn, as well as our Host Committee: Jessica Ashner, Shannon Gabay, Meri Goldstein, Michelle Gooel, Hillary Savit, Max Perkins, Nick Raffin, Elaine Sutton, and Jojo Sutton. Beit Ruth Educator Selected as “Teacher of The Year”

June 2022

Ever wonder why Beit Ruth’s girls have such high academic achievements, scoring above the national average on Israel’s matriculation exams, or jumping from a 3rd-grade reading level or 4th-grade math level to grade level in just 6 months? It’s because of teachers like Natalie Gerber.

A Math and Russian educator, Natalie was selected as “Teacher of the Year” by Israel's Ministry of Education. Surrounded by Ministry leaders and her Beit Ruth colleagues, she was recognized at a special ceremony at the Eretz Yisrael Museum in Tel Aviv. A poster highlighting her dedication read, in part:

“Natalie creates a warm bond with the girls, and cares for them while also setting a high bar. She does not give up on them. She attends all activities in the Village and always comes to the rescue with love and her whole heart, for the girls’ success and for advancing the school.”

Mazel Tov, Natalie! We are so proud of you!

And speaking of academic accomplishments, Beit Ruth girls and staff celebrated our girls' achievements during a special graduation ceremony. Our graduates showed up EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. ready to learn, worked hard, and understood that education is key to a better future. And did we mention that they aced their matriculation exams (similar to SATs)! What a tremendous start to the next chapter in their lives.

Kol Hakavod to our graduates and teachers!

Knesset Art Exhibit: “Portraits From the Heart”

November 2021

“Portraits From the Heart” was a special art exhibit of paintings by our girls displayed in Israel’s Knesset! Created as part of our Art Therapy Program, the exhibition marked the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, held annually on November 25.

The exhibit was organized following a visit to Beit Ruth by Knesset Member Aida Touma-Suleiman, Chair of the Committee for the Advancement of Women & Gender Equality. During her visit, Ms. Touma-Suleiman spoke with our girls, and was impressed by their talents. She invited Beit Ruth to display the girls’ paintings in the Knesset. In addition to members of the Committee for the Advancement of Women, viewers of the exhibit included Israel’s Foreign Affairs Minister Yair Lapid; Minister of Finance, Avigdor Liberman; and members of the public.

International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

November 2021

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, led by the UN Secretary General and the UN Women, aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls around the world. It calls for global action to increase awareness, promote advocacy, and create opportunities to discuss challenges and solutions.

To commemorate the day, the Beit Ruth Village welcomed more than 100 friends and volunteers to participate in creative workshops, such as mosaic artwork, as well as a communal performance with Koolulam (a social-music initiative that performs mass singing events).

As part of our Advocacy & Outreach Initiative, Beit Ruth’s Village Manager, Mor Ben Simchon Lipin, and our Director of Advocacy and Outreach, Ronit Lev-Ari, opened the day with remarks about the importance of advocating for violence against women. Beit Ruth girls also presented about what this day means to them. A., 16 years old, said, “Beit Ruth has given me the chance to have control of my life. It hasn’t been easy, but I am receiving the tools I need in order to succeed. On this day we need to remember that the choice is ours and it is possible to advocate for change.”

Beit Ruth Raises Awareness of Domestic Violence Epidemic to International Audience

November 2020

More than 450 leaders from around the world joined “Girls & Women At Risk of Violence: The Global Challenge and Israel’s Experience.” This virtual webinar, hosted by Beit Ruth in partnership with Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and MASHAV Carmel Training Center, brought together experts in the field domestic violence, and leading trainers who address the issue on the international stage. Featured speakers included Israeli Ambassador Eynat Shlein and Beit Ruth’s own Ronit Lev-Ari, a pioneer in the field of violence against women.

Drawing attention to the global epidemic of violence against girls and young woman, the November 18 event commemorated the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, held annually on November 25. Panelists discussed how they address issues related to domestic violence against girls and women through direct programs and services, and by building the capacity of women worldwide to contribute to efforts in their own countries.

Raz, a Beit Ruth Alumna, shared her transformative story. “Being at Beit Ruth completely changed the direction of my life. Perhaps what I am most proud of is breaking the cycle of generational abuse so my daughters will never have to know a life of fear, a life of harm, a life on the streets, and a life that is not worth living. Instead, they will know love. All of this is because of Beit Ruth.”

Danielle Burenstein, Executive Director of Beit Ruth for Young Women and Girls At Risk, moderated the program. Other panelists included Iris Twerski, Managing Director of Beit Ruth for Young Women & Girls At Risk; Raz, one of more than 300 proud alumnae; Hava Karrie Director, The Golda Meir MASHAV Carmel International Training Center; and Angelina Atabong Aruke Sub Director, Department of Human Rights and International Cooperation, Ministry of Justice, Cameroon.

Celebrating International Day of the Girl with Knesset Member, Keti Shitrit

October 2020

In recognition of the International Day of the Girl, Beit Ruth hosted a virtual conversation with Member of Knesset, Keti Shitrit, along with Danielle Burenstein, Executive Director, Iris Twerski, Managing Director, and Ronit Lev-Ari, Director of Advocacy & Outreach, to give voice to girls at-risk. MK Shitrit is the Chairwoman of the Subcommittee for Girls and Young Women At Risk, part of the Knesset’s Committee for the Advancement of Women & Gender Equality. This was a unique opportunity for our girls to advocate for themselves as they courageously shared stories about what it means to feel invisible; to experience trauma; and then to be able to receive an education, therapy, and caring support at Beit Ruth.

We want to thank MK Shitrit for participating in a meaningful conversation and for taking our girls’ message back to the Knesset in order to address the critical issues that impact our girls and the estimated 30,000 at-risk girls in Israel. MK Shitrit told our girls, "It is your choice to choose the way you want to be in this world," and then said, "I choose to help you.”

The Beit Ruth Village Celebrates Its Bat Mitzvah Year

December 2019

It is hard to believe that December marked the last month of celebrating the Bat Mitzvah year of Beit Ruth. What an incredible milestone – 13 years of bringing in and caring for girls, most of whom arrived with just the clothes on their backs and, if they were lucky, a toothbrush in their hands. Hundreds of girls, as young as 13 – frightened and suffering from trauma – were welcomed into the compassionate arms of our staff who provide lifesaving interventions.

We are also so proud and grateful to share that we have broken ground on a fourth residential house! This will increase our capacity to serve 60 girls at a time. And we are working on raising the funds to build a fifth house. Within these houses, Beit Ruth girls are being taught dignity because they are treated with dignity. Every girl receives kindness, love, gentleness, and, yes, firmness, because we all need that too. We thank you so very much for your continued and critical support of our girls. Wishing all of you a happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year! Thank you for helping to save a world entire.

Wedding Dress Project with Israeli Dress Designer

September 2019

Among the therapeutic Enrichment Programs at Beit Ruth is Art Therapy, a cornerstone of our Integrated Academic and Therapeutic Programming. Art Therapy uncovers hidden talents while building confidence, trust, and self-esteem.

This year, we partnered with famed Israeli dress designer Galia Lahav for “The Wedding Dress Project.” This project signifies transformation and represents a declaration of our girls living their truths and committing to change.

Fixed in our minds to have one particular meaning, it takes courage to cut, color, and change the fundamental nature of a wedding dress. However, much more courage and strength is required to change the course of a person’s life – especially one that began with tragedy and distress.

Inspired by their personal life stories, our girls were given the chance to reimagine and redesign each dress, using vibrant colors, textiles, feathers, and decorative stones. Through this artistic endeavor, girls expressed feelings about material possessions, their physical and emotional health, their trauma, being reborn at Beit Ruth, and finding their voice.

Summertime at Beit Ruth Means Trips & Fun

August 2019

Summertime at Beit Ruth means Educational Field Trips that enable Beit Ruth girls to experience the beauty, diversity, and history of their home country. Summer 2019 gave our girls a diverse mix of nature, city, education, and fun!

Beit Ruth staff, Summer Fellows from Tufts University, and girls took on Jerusalem with visits to the Friends of Zion Museum, the Knesset (Israeli Parliament), and the Western Wall (Kotel) with an unexpected stop at the beautiful Sacher Park. This was a very special trip for some of the girls because not only was it an experiential learning opportunity, but their first time in Jerusalem.

The girls also had a fun 24-hour getaway to camp at a nearby Kibbutz. This was to prepare for an early morning “Jeep Trip” through the Northern Mountains. Our girls set up tents, took a dip in the pool, and helped prepare a delicious feast of grilled meats, vegetables, falafel, hummus, and more! The night culminated in a game of “Survivor” coordinated by our Shinshinyot (young Israeli girls who perform a year of National Service), that consisted of a series of games from scavenger hunts to three-legged races to win beverages and edible prizes. The following morning, 12 Jeeps roared through the mountains against the backdrop of Israel’s natural beauty.

Summer’s final excursion was a kayaking trip to celebrate the end of Summer School. It was wonderful to see the girls working together as their oars synchronized to gently push their boats down the stream. Some kayaks decided to race each other while others chose to leisurely float forward while occasionally splashing each other with water. As everyone settled down for lunch, the girls (and staff) were tired, but happy. The combination of cool water and warm company was the perfect way to end their hard work throughout the year.

And with that, Summer 2019 is a wrap!

Beit Ruth Launches Summer Fellows Program with Tufts University

June 2019

Beit Ruth is proud to announce that we are now part of the Tufts University International Fellowship Program! The Tufts/Beit Ruth Summer Fellows, Elena and Aviva, arrived at the Village in June for a 9-week Summer Fellows program, primarily focusing on teaching English as a Second Language to our girls and staff.

“The highlight of my time here has been getting to know the girls at Beit Ruth,” Elena says. “Their resilience and strength continues to amaze me every day!”

The Fellows have been spending time getting to know all of the girls and staff while learning the routine, schedule, and philosophy of Beit Ruth. They are busy prepping English lessons for summer school with Orit, Beit Ruth’s educator, while also providing one-on-one tutoring for girls who are studying for Israel’s matriculation exams. Art, music, and communal meals are also being used to incorporate English into everyday activities. Improvement is already being seen!

Beit Ruth Founders Visit the Village

April 2019

It is always a special day at the Beit Ruth Village when founders Susan and Michael Ashner spend the day visiting with our girls and with the staff while taking in the amazing growth of what they started 16 years ago.

Inspiration runs on both sides of these special relationships. The girls always look forward to seeing Susan and Michael and growing the special bond that they share. They share hugs, stories, and hope. Susan and Michael are also inspired by what our girls have accomplished since their last visit - improved English, greater openness, and the ability to dream.

A Special Passover in the Beit Ruth Village

April 2019

Thanks to our angel hosts, the Iranian American Jewish Federation, and donors, more than 200 people gathered at the Beit Ruth Village for an amazing Passover celebration! Food; music with DJ Gal, saxophonist Yarden, and a surprise appearance by celebrity singer, Dudu Aharon, brought everyone to their feet; and a moving ribbon cutting to name one of our houses and a groundbreaking to get started on another were hallmarks of the day!

This is an amazing new stage of growth for Beit Ruth that will allow us to go from caring for 45 to 60 girls at a time. That means more girls at-risk who are being educated, learning life skills, overcoming their trauma, and living lives they once only dreamed of!

A very special thank you to everyone who pave the way for social change. And thank you to all of our supporters and friends. Together we can - and together we are.

Mimouna Ceremony Marks the End of Passover

April 2019

Passover came to an end in the Village with the traditional Mimouna dinner (really, an array of unbelievable homemade desserts made with honey, nuts, and dried fruits!). This ancient Moroccan tradition marks the return to eating chametz (leavened bread). A spread of unbelievable sweet treats included made-to-order moufletta (pancakes), lovingly and expertly prepared on-the-spot.

Our girls did an incredible job creating the atmosphere, decorating a welcoming room from floor to ceiling. They dressed in traditional Moroccan garb and were joined by volunteers; staff and their families; alumnae; the mother and son musical duo of Ada and Elsiv Aleav, who sang and performed traditional Bukharian music; Shinshinyot (live-in volunteers); and so many friends of Beit Ruth!

The Andermans Visit Beit Ruth

January 2019

It was such a pleasure to host Carol & Arthur Anderman, along with their daughter, Debbie, and her husband, Hal at the Village. The family was at the Village to officially name the Gladys & Irving Coopersmith Atrium. We are especially grateful for the time taken to sit and listen to our girls share stories and the life changes they have experienced thanks to the care and innovative programs and services at Beit Ruth.

The Andermans have visited the Village previously, touring the campus, visiting with our girls and our dedicated staff, and witnessing the amazing transformation that happens here. Their presence is a beautiful reminder of our friends from across the ocean who show the girls at Beit Ruth that they are cared for and that we are not alone in our mission to stop the cycle of violence and empower our girls to become contributing members of Israel and the world. We look forward to welcoming them back!

Demonstrating to Stop Violence Against Women

October 2018

Beit Ruth's Director of Advocacy & Outreach and one of its founding staff members, Ronit Lev-Ari, was a co-founder and organizer of a nationwide demonstration to highlight the issue of violence against women in Israel. The demonstration, held October 18th, saw tens of thousands of people across Israel take a minute of silence – stopping wherever they were – to have their silence heard. Beit Ruth staff and girls participated, and also learned about some of the women killed thus far this year, victims of domestic violence in Israel.

For our girls, it was especially important to have them participate and understand that the world is listening. In an effort to further protect our girls from violence or abuse in the future, we discussed the warning signs of an abusive partner and the existing channels when seeking help. Ultimately at Beit Ruth, we aspire for our girls to recognize their own self-worth, strength, and their capacity to transform their lives.

New Village Garden Blooms at Beit Ruth

August 2018

A new Village garden was in full bloom thanks to long-time Beit Ruth supporter Alice Fixx. Alice spent months in her New York apartment designing this special garden to honor her sister and brother-in-law, and avid gardeners, Barbara Kasman and Art Wernicke.

Barbara and Art – also long-time and devoted Beit Ruth supporters – were overcome with emotion as the ribbon was officially cut on “The Barbara Kasman and Art Wernicke Garden.” Friends, including Yaakov Zada Daniel, star of the hit series, “Fauda,” gathered around and joyful tears were shed as the plaque was unveiled: “In Honor of the Many Beautiful Blossoms Who Thrive Here.”

New School Opens!

January 2018

Beit Ruth kicked off 2018 with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that opened our new on-site High School, the hallways of which buzz daily with the sounds of our girls racing toward greater academic achievement! The ribbon cutting in January was jus the first step to moving into our beautiful new school building. After just one semester, we are fulfilling our mission to empower Israel’s at-risk girls with the knowledge, skills, confidence, and opportunities that great education brings.

Thanks to the hundreds of family and friends, Israel and US board members, government officials, partners, and esteemed community members who were on hand to help us celebrate this milestone in Beit Ruth’s history.

The emotional ceremony included speeches from local officials and a musical performance by our girls. Beit Ruth Founder and Board Chair Susan Ashner led the ribbon-cutting and the school was declared formally open and ready for teaching and learning! The dedication of the new school had everyone buzzing with excitement for the endless educational opportunities that this building represents for Beit Ruth girls. Now that buzz is heard daily in the school hallways as our girls continue their journey toward educational achievement and a brighter, better future!

July 2017

As well as spending precious time with our wonderful girls and incredible staff in the Village, the visit by Beit Ruth Founder, Susan Ashner, and Executive Director Danielle Burenstein, was packed full of important meetings that will help Beit Ruth continue to grow and exponentially increase our reach and impact – and save so many more at-risk girls in Israel.

We were so honored to meet with Member of Knesset Orly Levy, a champion of women's rights and powerhouse in Israeli politics. Her extensive knowledge, deep passion, and unwavering dedication to helping at-risk girls and Beit Ruth's cause was truly inspiring and we look forward to continuing to partner on key issues around girls at-risk.
